Samhain Ritual

DPP_5922

Samhain is the start of the new year, a time to remember and honor your ancestors. It also a great time to delve into the Roots of Twisting Yew and discover new growth for yourself.  Below is a ritual for a group but it is also viable for the solitary practitioner.

It says to gather at a crossroad, but that does not only imply a street crossroad. You may find a crossroad of animals trails deep in the forest that is close to a suitable ritual space, in which to start.

In a deviation from most rituals, the Quarter Calls begin at the crossroads and not at the ritual space. It is intentional, as the ritual mindset is to travel down to the Roots, down to the Underworld.

It is not necessary to have a bonfire, a candle or two in the center of the group is sufficient. Other items would be photos of ancestors, heirlooms, skulls, images of death deities, black candles.

Gather at a crossroad

Quarter Calls

Hail North, the keeper of the dark, the land of the deep thicket, creeping vines, and the land of the Dwarves. Awaken this day to the tribe of Twisting Yew, and those of us who are Guardians of the Roots. We honor you and welcome your grounding energy into our ritual.

Hail East, the keeper of whispers, the bearer of messages, the land of the mist, the talking leaves, the howling Night, and the land of the Fae. Awaken this day to the tribe of Twisting Yew, and those of us who are Guardians of the Roots. We honor you and welcome your moving energy into our ritual.

Hail South, the keeper of flames, the land smoldering ash, burning truth, building creativity, land of the Salamanders. Awaken this day to the tribe of Twisting Yew, and to those of us who are Guardians of the Roots. We honor you and welcome your searing energy into our ritual.

Hail West, the keeper of the ponds, the land of the Underworld, land of emotions, land of the Nymphs. Awaken this day to the tribe of Twisting Yew, and to those of us who are Guardians of the Roots. We honor you and welcome your cyclic energy into our ritual.

To Twisting Yew, Teacher, Wander, stripper of false, Awaken us to your call, to Your path. We honor you and welcome your blessings upon our ritual.

To Hekate, Queen of the Witches, Guide to the Yew Roots, Awaken us to your call, to Your path. We honor you and welcome your blessings upon our ritual.

On this day

In this Hour

When the Veil is thin

I, The Guardian of the Roots, Call to you Hekate to guide me/us down the Twisting Yew.

Down through the winding stairs into the Underworld, where we may touch the Root, touch our roots, where we may learn.

Guide us down to where our ancestors began so that we may honor them this night.

(set the honey, garlic, and bread down at the front of the  crossroads.)

Participants follow the Guardian in a spiral formation towards the fire. They may stop at various ancestor shrines to honor them. When Everyone reaches the fire and forms comfortably around it proceed.

Guardian: We stand in the Underworld in the center of the Twisting Yew Roots. We bring with us all of our mistakes over this past year. We bring with us all of our pain from this last year. We offer them to the Underworld to feed the Roots. We offer these in order to understand the lessons they brought to us so that they can grow into productive seeds for our future.

Into the fire, we throw them. In the fire we see their message, We see the message of the Twisting Yew. ( participates throw any burnable items into the fire)

Into the ground we bury them. The roots shall take the contents of these devouring jars and release their hold on us, in exchange we shall carry forth the Message of the Roots, the message of the Twisting Yew. (participants who have jars shall bury them.)

Cakes and Ale

(Allow time for all to receive their message. If there is drumming keep a soft steady beat. When all are done, Guardian may proceed with closing.)

Guardian:

On this Day

In this Hour

We witness the birth of a new year, a new root, a new path.

What will you take with you?

What will you leave behind?

Our time here in the Underworld is fleeting,

Our time here at the Roots has come to an end.

Let us return and be born anew.

I, Guardian of the Roots, Call to you Hekate, guide us back up through the Twisting Yew, back to the living. ( participants follow the Guardian widdershins out away from the fire. Again people may stop at ancestor shrines to give thanks and honor. Proceed to the crossroads and offer one last offering. When everyone is back at the crossroads. Quarter and Diety release/Thanks )
